The Department of Hydraulic Engineering was established on October 1st in 1964 as a part of the Branch of Land Reclamation within Faculty of Agronomy at the Higher School of Agriculture in Poznań. The founders of the Department were Dr. J. Bogumił Lewandowski (adjunct) and M. Sc. Jan Borowski (assistant). One year later, a young graduate of Gdańsk Technical University, M. Sc. Leon Rembeza, joined the staff.
The Department was organised from its base and the elementary equipment was provided in a short time period. On July 1st 1968 Dr J. B. Lewandowski was promoted an assistant professor and a half-year later he became the head of the Department. M. Sc. Bogusław Przedwojski, one of the first graduates of the Branch of Land Reclamation, joined the staff on October 1st 1968. In September 1970 at the newly created Faculty of Land Reclamation a Institute of Hydro-Engineering was founded on the basis of the following chairs:
· Theory of Structure,
· Hydraulic Engineering,
· Geodesy,
· Geotechnics.
In 1973 Higher School of Agriculture was renamed to the Agricultural University, and the Department's staff was strengthen by M. Sc. Ryszard Błażejewski. The Institute had existed till November 7th 1981. Under martial law in March 1982 the Ministry of Science, Higher Education and Technics reestablished the Department of Hydraulic Engineering. In the year 1984 the Department moved from the old villa in Mazowiecka Street 26 to a new pavilion in Wojska Polskiego Street 73A (see photo). Ten years later within the Department a Section of Rural Water Supply Sanitation was created, headed by Dr Ryszard Błażejewski.
After the retirement of prof. J. B. Lewandowski in October 2000, a new chair head became Dr R. Błażejewski. He initiated creation of the Section of Water Resources Engineering within frame of the Department. The dean of faculty appointed Dr. B. Przedwojski as the head of the section.
In January 2001 Dr. R. Błażejewski was promoted a professor, and the same title was conferred to Dr. L. Rembeza one year later.
In April 2005 Dr. B. Przedwojski was promoted a professor.
