In January 2025, the Hungarian Ornithological and Nature Conservation Society (MME) in collaboration with national park directorates and other nature conservation organizations organized the 22nd annual census of wintering birds of prey. For the eighth time, conservationists from neighboring countries also participated. According to a statement by the MME, the resulting distribution map for the Carpathian Basin included over 2,000 eagles and 250 falcons, totaling 18,486 individual birds across 17 species of raptors.
Participants recorded a total of 988 sightings of white-tailed eagles (Haliaeetus albicilla), 732 eastern imperial eagles (Aquila heliaca), three golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos), and eight greater spotted eagles (Clanga clanga). The statement noted that because a single „roaming” bird might have been recorded multiple times, the number of observed individuals could exceed the actual population size. Additionally, 85 saker falcons (Falco cherrug) and 42 peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) were observed.
