Protection against overhead power lines

In Bulgaria a project has been being led that focuses on reduction of bird deaths caused by electrocution and collision with overhead power lines. The project „Safe Sky for Birds in North-Eastern Bulgaria” aims at preventing mortality of 16 threatened bird species that are a priority for funding under the LIFE program. The project is a joint imitative of EDN North – the electricity distribution company in North-Eastern Bulgaria and The Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds – a partner of BirdLife International.

The Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds has been also involved as a partner of another project “Transnational conservation of birds along Danube river” that covers the same topic. Its aim is to deploy protection measures in order to prevent birds from collisions with power lines and from electrocution and in that way to reduce bird mortality. The LIFE Danube Free Sky covers one of the most important migration corridors, stop-over sites and wintering places – the Danube river along which 15 partners from 7 countries are involved.

In both projects Greater Spotted Eagle (Clanga clanga) is of interest.
