of Life Sciences (PULS) is a scientific and didactic unit that conducts research and implements conservation activities aimed at the cognition and active protection of the most endangered plant and animal species, including the world&#8217;s longest study of the Greater Spotted Eagle (thanks to which the Polish population of this species, as the only one known in Europe, is not significantly endangered). In general, one of the University&#8217;s areas of scientific and research activity is the implementation of various projects financed by both national and international funds. Some of these are funded under the European Union&#8217;s Seventh Framework Programme and Horizon 2020, while others are also supported by international research and strategic programmes. Researchers&#8217; activities are also reflected in grants funded by national funds under agreements concluded with the National Science Centre, the National Centre for Research and Development and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education. As the largest among the 23 polish national parks and one of the largest in Europe, it covers an area of 59 223 hectares in the northeastern part of the country. It encompasses the areas of the Biebrza River valley, characterized by natural meanders and a unique complex of vast peat bogs known as the Biebrza Marshes.<\/p><p>This location with its unique mosaic of wetland habitats and extensive agriculture, serves as a refuge for rare, endangered and declining plant and animal species, particularly birds such as aquatic warbler (Acrocephalus paludicola), great snipe (Gallinago media) and greater spotted eagle (Clanga clanga). The landscapes, ecosystems, and habitats characteristic of river valleys, which have retained their naturalness here, are already a rarity.<\/p><p>The international recognition of the natural values of the Biebrza Valley is confirmed by the classification of BirdLife International and its inclusion in 2004 in the Natura 2000 network as a Special Protection Area for Birds (PLB 200006 Ostoja Biebrza\u0144ska with an area of 148,509.33 ha) and a Special Area of Conservation (PLH 200008 Dolina Biebrzy with an area of 121,206.23 ha). It is the national partner of BirdLife International. Our work focuses on implementing the concept of the Important Bird Areas and establishing functionally connected network of Special Protection Areas (SPAs) as a cornerstone of the Natura 2000 network. A central component of BSPB\u2019s work is dedicated to conserving globally threatened species, among which many raptors (e.g. Egyptian vulture, Black vulture, Imperial eagle, Lesser Spotted eagle and Saker falcon), by applying a diverse range of conservation measures to mitigate threats facing them (e.g. securing long term protection to their habitats, removing deadly electrical pylons that electrocute birds). BSPB\u2019s work on the Saker Falcon started since our establishment, with monitoring of remaining breeding territories and understanding the threats. We take responsibility in these platforms, contribute to them and we develop collaborations with non-governmental organizations working for similar purposes.<\/p><p>In addition to all this, we believe that the success in the field of nature conservation is directly related to the capacities of institutions and organizations operating in this field and the effectiveness of civil society in the decision processes.
