The project is supported by an international grant from Ecotone-Telemetry. Bird tagging began in 2019 using GPS/GSM receivers/transmitters fitted to both adult birds and nestlings. A report published by A. Simon, S. Domashevsky, M. Franchuk, and O. Panchuk describes the summer behavior of young Greater Spotted Eagles that had not yet begun breeding.
The study utilized geocoded data transmitted primarily via GPRS packet data over a mobile network (as SMS-based communication allowed for location updates only four times a day). When GPRS transmission data were unavailable, data from SMS messages were used instead.
Adult birds returned to their breeding grounds (as is natural) and spent the entire summer near these areas, even in years when breeding was unsuccessful. The publication presents maps for:

three young Greater Spotted Eagles in their second calendar year (i.e., after their first return from wintering grounds) — Greater Spotted Eagles in their second year of life (aged approximately one year) actively traveled significant distances, remaining in certain locations for extended periods. In all cases, the distance flown from the natal site during the summer season (as the crow flies) amounted to hundreds of kilometers; the total distance covered by the birds as they traveled from place to place amounted to thousands of kilometers;

two greater spotted eagles in their third calendar year – the scale of dispersal from the natal site was smaller, and the birds showed a stronger attachment to a specific territory; however, this did not rule out spontaneous movements — sometimes spanning hundreds of kilometers — that concluded with a return to their regular home range;

one greater spotted eagle in its fourth year of life – territorial attachment was even stronger;

one greater spotted eagle during the summer that had begun nesting – the nature of movement, and consequently the behavioral strategy, differed radically between sexually mature breeding birds and those that have not yet attempted their first breeding.

A more detailed study of the areas where young greater spotted eagles spent extended periods during the molting season made it possible to identify their preferred territories. These birds most frequently chose river valleys near open wetlands and clearly avoided forested areas.
Preliminary research results summarized in 2024 suggest that young greater spotted eagles engage in extensive summer movements within their breeding range, alternating these with stopovers at specific locations. As the birds age, the range of these movements decreases, and they become increasingly attached to specific territories.

About migration and breeding of other birds in 2020 (two known since 2019 and four observed in 2020) one can read in another post.

According to reports from the Ukrainian Bird of Prey Research Centre, a research project on the migration of the Greater Spotted Eagle (Clanga clanga) is being conducted there.
