Nighttime Workshops for Young Scientists

During Researchers’ Night at the Poznań University of Life Sciences, participants in the workshop titled „Where Does the Spotted Eagle Fly? Science Without Borders Using GPS and Maps” followed the trails of greater spotted eagles. We conducted these activities as part of the educational outreach for the LIFE „Above the Borders” project. The event took place on the 25th September 2026.
Working in teams, participants read geographic coordinates recorded by GPS receivers and plotted the birds’ migration routes across Europe, Asia and Africa on maps. They calculated distances traveled and compared the pace of autumn and spring migrations. Combining their results revealed the diversity of the greater spotted eagles’ journeys.
The Researchers’ Night workshops integrated biology, geography and mathematics. At the same time, they highlighted the threats migratory birds face and the conservation efforts undertaken to protect them. They demonstrated that effective protection of migratory birds requires knowledge, modern technology and cross-border cooperation.
This marks another educational initiative within the project, following an educational game previously organized in Turkey.
